The Sun is Also a Star -- Athena Dumlao

Image
The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon is a great romance novel that highlights the relationship formed by complete opposites in a less-than-ideal situation. Daniel, a Korean-American aspiring poet, means Nashta, an illegal immigrant from Jamaica living in New York for her last few weeks before her family is scheduled to get deported.  The book is written in multiple perspectives, which is often a controversial but often used style in novels. Some people say that it may ruin the breath-taking ‘chance’ aspect that is sought after in romance. However, I think the way it’s used in this novel is done really well.  One thing that this book has that I think makes the perspective change stand out well is the fact that it isn’t simply switching from one’s thoughts to another. The writing style completely changes to match the personality of the character. Even with only a few chapters and switches in, it was easy to be able to tell which character the point of view was currently ...

Would a Later School Start Time Increase Student Success? - Neeraja Nair

Image
Having a later school time is a topic that is discussed among many people. I believe that there are pros and cons to both sides of the topic and it’s important to hear both sides. Many people don’t understand the cons of having a later school time. Having a later school time can affect how much sleep the student gets but in reality, I think that students will just use the later school time as an excuse to stay up longer. It is true that many students have sport activities or after school activities that take up most of their evening. Once they come back home, they might not have as much time to do homework and to study. So, having a later start time can be useful to many people.  Having a later start time can also mean that school ends later. And although this may sound fine to some people, if you actually think about it, you’re going to get home later than you usually do. Getting home later means less time to do what you have to do and less time to sle...

Does Youtube Cause More Harm or Good? - Frank Hechler

Image
Does Youtube Cause More Harm or Good? As of the past couple of years, youtube has become one of or if not the biggest forms of entertainment on the planet. Many may have heard of huge statistics on the number of hours the average person uses on the site. There are many reasons that youtube is great, such as the huge range of tutorials for things ranging from making origami to building go karts. However, many think that youtube is a waste of time and the majority of content doesn’t help people. Firstly, what are the benefits of youtube? The creators are just (for the most part) somewhat regular people, or at least can be. Anyone who has an internet connection and a camera can make videos and upload them to youtube. This is great for people who want to show their skills to the world, or even just make some people laugh at a funny moment. There are an incredible amount of people on the platform, both creators and viewers, so you can find basically whatever you want to find. Lear...

Do Machines Represent a Threat to Humans? - Henry Wang

Image
Is AI going to doom us all?      In order to answer the question at hand, we must first define what machine we are talking about. Machines are non living things, each having a definite function (a phone to send messages, a printer to write ink on paper, or a computer to process information). But these are not the machines that “pose” a threat to humans, rather it is something relatively new, Artificial Intelligence, which is the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, computer systems. First developed in 1950 through a paper written by the famous World War 2 decoder, Alan Turing, it describes how a computer program could mimic a human thought process, and how it would revolutionize every aspect of life, from medicare, to complex calculations, all the way to self-driving cars.        All of such seems like a new chapter in the book of human history, planting a seed for others to grow upon, developing more complex systems for civil...

Crazy Rich Asians -- Comparing the Book to the Hit Movie

Image
After the hit movie “Crazy Rich Asians” premiered in 2018, the book that it was based on got attention from fans everywhere. It’s not an uncommon thing for the original to be overshadowed, but if you enjoyed the movie at all or plan to watch it in the future, the book by Kevin Kwan is a must-read.  The book “Crazy Rich Asians” is almost entirely similar to the movie. The book switches perspectives often to be able to cover all of the events happening in the midst of the cast’s riches. The book’s main event and storyline, however, is Rachel Chu’s sudden discovering of her fiance, Nick Young’s, many riches hiding from her in China. Throughout the book, she goes from knowing almost nothing, never even having met Nick’s family prior, to have to keep up with her now known in-law family and their expectations.  For those that have already watched the movie, reading the book could definitely shine on some of the main character’s personality, since the book ...
