Goodbye Stranger by Rebecca Stead - Neeraja Nair

“When she was eight years old, Bridget Barsamian woke up in a hospital, where a doctor told her she wouldn’t live.”Goodbye Stranger by Rebecca Stead is a book about a girl named Bridget Barsamian who goes by Bridge. The story is about how Bridge overcomes her fears in life. Bridge was in an accident when she was 8 years old and doctors thought she wouldn’t live for very long. Now she’s in 7th grade and has friends that are supportive of her and her decisions. She also makes a new friend, Sherm, and she learns some interesting things from him such as how he doesn’t believe the landing on the moon is real. Alongside Bridge’s story, Sherm’s side of the story is also told.   Although I’ve already read this book before, I enjoy reading it again. The first time I was a bit confused on the format of the book but the second time I read through it, I understood it a lot better.  I really liked how well readers are able to connect with the characters in the book. I felt like it mad...

Do memes make the internet a better place?

Do Memes Make the Internet a Better Place? (I don't pretend to be a meme lord or know much about memes, much of this could be applied to internet comedy in general) 100% yes. Or, on second thought, about 90% yes. With really anything on the internet, no matter how positive something tries to be there is always going to be something negative about it. For example, you might see a very high quality video, non controversial topics, very education, etc, but there are always some dislikes. Especially with memes, there are probably millions of them out there with thousands of people making them - of course there are going to be some negative memes that negatively affect some people. More than that, memes are just a stimulus that could make some people laugh out loud and their day will be brightened because of it. However, a different person could look at it and frown.  Mostly, memes are just funny things to laugh at. Not just that, but they are interestingly, maybe even embarrassi...

Chlorine Sky by Mahogany Browne - Athena

Image
“Chlorine Sky” by Mahogany Browne is a novel portrayed with a collection of poetry-style chapters. We follow Sky, the main character, as she deals with issues surrounding the many relationships in her life. The main issue she deals with throughout the majority of the book is her on and off relationship with her long-time best friend, Lay Li.  I really enjoyed the connection between the sports that Sky played throughout the book and her emotions throughout the story. The two sports that were highlighted were swim (as you can draw from the title) and basketball. What I perceived was that her swim was constantly connected to stress or fear, Sky often related her situations with the feeling of drowning or sinking, and basketball was associated with insecurity.  Her scenes showing her relating to water often exhibit her dealing with a lot of stress. A clearer example of this is when she first meets her boyfriend, Clifton. At this point in their new relationship, she still ca...

Has Earth Hit its 6th Mass Extinction? Henry Wang

Image
Throughout all of Earth’s history, species have come and gone, with 99% of all species that ever lived on Earth extinct (4 billion). While this number shouldn’t be much of a worry as life on Earth has been around for around 3.5 billion years, the rising number of extinctions due to humanity can show that we might be taking a turn for the worst. Nature was never forgiving, with animals going extinct being a common occurrence. However, climate change (deforestation, fossil fuels, etc.) has caused the rate of extinction to be much higher than it should, shrinking the biodiversity of our planet essential to its ecosystems. With the excess amount of species dying off every year, ample evidence points to the fact that we are touching, if not already swimming through the 6th mass extinction. Why is it called the 6th mass extinction in the first place? Well obviously because it is the 6th with five preceding, but in order to comprehend how big a mass extinction truly is, we need to compare the...
